Searching for an article using the Journal Locator:

When you have a citation, use the Journal Locator:
  1. Type in the title of the journal.
  2. If we have access to it online, there will be links to the databases that provide access. Check that the dates covered match the date of the article you're looking for.
  3. Click on the appropriate database and follow links to the article. Sometimes you'll need to look for journal volume and issue numbers, sometimes you'll look for dates. It depends on which database you're in.
  4. If you don't see any databases listed but see SCSU Print and Microform Serials Collection, click on the link and CONSULS will open to show you which volumes of the journal we have in print.
If Buley doesn't have a journal online or in print:
  1. Use iCONN, the Connecticut Digital Library's catalog, or WorldCat to find out if any libraries in the area own the book, and arrange to go to the library yourself. It's a good idea to call the other library before you go and ask whether you'll be able to check books out.
  2. Fill out an Interlibrary Loan (ILL) form. It can take 2 or more weeks for ILL books to arrive, so plan ahead.

Sample search by citation:

For demonstration purposes, we will look for this article:

Bharadwaj, Sneha V. and Graves, Amanda G. “Efficacy of the Discreteness of Voicing Category (DOVC) Measure for Characterizing Voicing Errors in Children with Cochlear Implants: A Report.” Journal of Speech, Language & Hearing Research: 51 (3): 629-635. Jun. 2008.

Click on Journal Locator on the Buley Library Home Page:

In the Journal Locator search box, enter the name of the Journal. In the example above, this is Journal of Speech, Language and Hearing Research.

Tips:

It isn’t necessary to type in the whole journal title.

Leave out punctuation marks in the title.

If the journal title includes “and”, you might need to switch it to &, or vice versa.

The search results indicate that we have access to the article online through several databases:

Check the dates. Our sample article was published in 2008. Since all of the databases listed indicate dates before 2008 “to present”, we should be able to get to the article through any of them.

What you see next depends on which database you select. All Ebsco databases will look like the example below, but Gale databases (Academic OneFile, Expanded Academic ASAP, Health & Wellness, etc.), ScienceDirect, JSTOR, FirstSearch databases, and publisher pages display differently. Please consult a reference librarian for assistance. You can email me at clercs1@southernct.edu

Please note that if you are off-campus, you'll be prompted for your ID number and PIN when you click on a database name.

Clicking on Communication & Mass Media Complete will result in this screen:

You can click on the year which will show the issues as in the example to the right. You then click on the correct issue (for our example, issue 3) and then browse the contents:

OR

You can click on Search within this publication and type in a few words from the title (You can't see it in the illustration, but I typed and prevalence and stuttering):

Clicking on the PDF Full Text link will open the article so you can print it.

Be sure to use the printer icon that will appear right above the document text and not the browser print command or icon.

If we don’t have access to the article online but you see SCSU Print and Microform Serials Collection, Buley has some volumes of the journal in print:

Clicking on the SCSU Print and Microform Serials Collection link will open CONSULS and indicate which volumes we own:

If Buley doesn't have any access to the journal at all, you can check iCONN or WorldCat to find area libraries that do have the journal, or use Interlibrary Loan. Please consult a reference librarian for help.
