Law Resources: Finding Federal Regulations

Before you start, you need to decide what you're looking for:

• The text of a regulation as it was passed by an agency OR
• The regulation as it is currently in effect, complete with changes that may have been made since it was enacted.

Finding the first version of the regulation in the Federal Register (FR):

Use Lexis-Nexis Congressional Universe
Select Regulations
Select Federal Register
The default is Keyword searching, but if you select Get A Document you can search by citation

Use Westlaw
Choose Federal Register
Don't forget to put quotation marks around search phrases (ex: "special education")

Finding the current version of a regulation in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR):

Use Lexis-Nexis Congressional Universe
Select Regulations
Select Code of Federal Regulations
